When NetZero DataShield connects to the Internet it establishes a connection with one of the NetZero DataShield servers, and gets assigned an IP address based on the server. Because of this, your normal IP address is replaced with a NetZero DataShield temporary IP address. This adds an extra layer of security by keeping you anonymous during your connection, and preventing anyone from tracing you.
